Call to fibre artists to create a leaf!

Asha Croggan is member of SOFAAR who does volunteer work with Suicide Prevention. Every year, for their annual gathering, Asha organises what she calls a Community HeART project.

This year the theme of the gathering is The Power of Community and the symbol is a TREE.

Asha is looking for fibre artists to create a leaf – or several – for the tree. The leaves will be distributed to all the participants at the Suicide Prevention gathering and they will attach them to the community tree in honour of someone they care for and/or in honour of the commitment they are making to strengthen our collective community.

As Asha says ” The power of community is like the power of a tree. Each leaf a member of the community rising up to do their part in creating a kinder, more compassionate, more resilient community”

Details of how you can participate by making a leaf (before the September 5th deadline), can be found in the attached document.

World Embroidery Day stitching

Susan Caley-Purdy and Christine Igot stitched for an hour down at Mrs. Nicholson Home in Annapolis Royal in honour of World Embroidery Day on July 30th.

Many people were interested to learn there was a World Embroidery Day!

Also snapped a photo of a visitor’s tattoo!

She calls herself a “hard-core Canadian knitter” and this tattoo is the proof.

We all celebrate our love of fibre in many ways.

Members’ exhibit coming up!

If you are a SOFAAR member, please think about submitting a piece for the members’ exhibit: “SOFAAR presents the Art of Fibre”, coming up at ARCAC at the end of August.

Submission deadline is fast approaching… August 1st, and members have received details of the submission requirements in their latest newsletter.

This will be a curated exhibit which means an independent party will select the work to be exhibited. Our curator for this exhibit will be Bonnie Baker, a well-known Annapolis Royal artist who worked with textiles for many years. Bonnie will be looking at the submission seeking to showcase as broad a range of work as possible.

Bonnie will be making her choices “blind” – she will not know who has submitted pieces.

It will be our first annual exhibition and it will be held August 28th to September 25th in the Chapel Gallery at ArtsPlace, home of ARCAC.

World Embroidery Day: July 30th

The idea for World Embroidery Day came from the Swedish Embroiderer’s Guild and was first celebrated on July 30th, 2011.

There is a manifesto and this is part of it:

”We want to acknowledge embroidery as an act of free creativity, which can lead to free, creative thoughts and ideas. We want to tie our embroidery threads from the privileged northern hemisphere together with stiches that are sewn by embroidering sisters and brothers all over the world.

We want to be part of a joyfully creative peace movement. […]

The importance of embroidery must be made known and World Embroidery Day will spread around the world.

Make 30th July a day filled with creativity for the sake of Peace, Freedom and Equality.”

You can read the entire manifesto at the link below:

There is also a link for printing out pennants.

So find a friend and make a plan to embroider together on July 30th!

Hit and Miss Rug Challenge display – Moose River

The Rustic Crafters is a group of enthusiastic hookers, knitters and stitchers who meet every Friday in Weymouth at the common room of the public library.

Several SOFAAR members also belong to the this busy group.

They have just finished, under the guidance of Lorraine Lovett, a hooking hit and miss rug challenge of circles. The idea is to use the basic template – in this case circles – and do an original rug.

The results are amazing.

The exhibit of 20 rugs is on display during the month of May 2016 at Moose River Hooking Studio in Clementsport.
