Boro Workshop – Saturday, April 13th – SOFAAR Members Only

A reminder about our next SOFAAR Snips morning workshop, which will take place at 10am, April 13, 2024 at Granville Ferry Hall. This class will be facilitated by the wonderful Aprille Janes. This workshop is only available to SOFAAR Members.
About this workshop:
Boro (sometimes called Japanese patchwork) is a form of slow stitching. It developed in the 19th century in rural Japan as a means of preserving precious fabric items such as futons and clothing. It is essentially the practice of using a simple running stitch (known as a Sashiko stitch) to reinforce a textile item using spare or would-be-discarded scraps of fabric. Born from necessity, it has evolved into a distinctively gorgeous textile artform.
Boro requires few supplies and is extremely portable. While a small kit will be available for purchase ($2) it’s also a great way to use up those precious bits of cotton pieces in your own fabric stash. We encourage you to bring them along. Traditional boro would consist of darker fabrics (think indigo cottons) but you can certainly add colour if you want it!
If you haven’t already signed up and would like to attend,  please message Rachel at director3@sofaar.ca to register and I’ll send you a more detailed supply list.  An opportunity not to be missed!

Mending Workshop – Anita Cazzola

My name is Anita Cazzola, a SOFAAR member, and also the local textile repair person in Annapolis Royal. I work out of the “Mani D’oro” studio.

I wanted to pass along some information about mending workshops that I am facilitating at H’arts in Annapolis Royal on select Sunday afternoons (1:00 pm – 4:00 pm) through the winter (starting November 19, 2023). These may be of interest to SOFAAR members. I will be starting with a basic stitching foundations workshop that is likely not needed for the SOFAAR members, but the following 4 workshops dive into specific repair techniques for mending woven and then knit materials.
