The Sofaar Program committee invites you to an afternoon presentation by Karen Warner. This program is intended for members who would like to learn more about the principles of original design. Karen’s presentation will include the following:
-Sourcing good reference material
-What constitutes a good reference for a work of fibre
-Shape, Tone, Colour
-Colour temperature and how it affects the look of a work
-Composition and breaking up of borders, cutting things off and dynamic viewpoints
-Understanding tonality; making plains recede
-Complex colour
-Texture
-Thumbnails and colour studies: How to do them and in what medium.
Karen had a private apprenticeship in the Old Master methods and materials of drawing and painting followed by 2 years in representational impressionism. She has taught privately and to groups since the late 90’s. She works mostly in oils, graphite and coloured pencils; however, the basics of all art have the same underpinning that is applied to all mediums, fibre art included.
Please bring a small notebook for your own use.
Please let us know if you plan to attend so we know how much nibbles to provide.

The Annapolis Royal library would like to see more SOFAAR members use equipment in their innovation lab.
What equipment they have available for fibre artists are:
• Sewing machine
• Serger
• Bolivar cutter for rug hookers
• Swift and ball winder
• Drum carder
• Quilting rulers, mats and rotary cutters
• Lights with magnifiers
• Iron and ironing board
You do need to be a member of the library, which is free. In order to be able to use the equipment unsupervised, you are required to be signed off each piece you need to use.
How you do that is with Charlette Janes, who is the Systems and Collections Access Coordinator with the Annapolis Valley Regional Library. She will sign you off as being proficient, once you have had your training and you will receive a card stating that.
Charlette will be at the Annapolis Royal Library every 2nd Monday.
Her dates are:
November 18th
December 2nd, 16th.
Possibly she will be there December 30th too.
Phone beforehand at 902-531-2226 for the Dec. 30th date.
January 13th and 27th, 2020
You can just drop in on the above dates between the hours of 1 – 4pm at the Library, 143 Ritchie street, the rear entrance of the Academy behind and below the gym. Once you are signed off, then the Innovation lab is open for your use as below.
Monday 1 – 4pm
Wednesday 1 – 4pm
Saturday 10am – 2pm
We encourage you to make use of the free equipment. We are very fortunate to have it available to us as fibre artists.
